NFL Power Rankings

With Week 6 of the NFL here we decided to do our Power Rankings of the NFL.
20131009-5-questions
32. Jacksonville Jaguars – Realistically speaking I could see this team going 0-16 for the year. I don’t see anything that could possibly be good with this team.
31. New York Giants – I think Tom Coughlin has had great run but it seems like his time is up. When you can’t motivate your team anymore, they won’t listen, and aren’t fighting I don’t really think there is any turning around. While I do think the Giants still have talent on their team I don’t think they could make much of a push.
30. St. Louis Rams – While they did beat Jacksonville (big deal) there isn’t much hope in St. Louis. They devoted a lot of time and money into Sam Bradford who might be at best at this point a mediocre QB. While I do think they could put some more weapons around Bradford he must show improvement before he gets a Josh Freeman like scenario coming his way.
tampa-bay-buccaneers

They wished they could go back to these days

29.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Honestly, I don’t find the Bucs to be as bad as a lot of people are declaring. In the majority of their games they’ve played a lot of teams close. Their trouble is closing games which could possibly change with a quarterback change. I still think the Bucs have potential to at least coming out 2 in the NFC South.
28. Minnesota Vikings – Even with the Vikings picking up Josh Freeman I don’t see that as the pickup that will improvement the Vikings. Their defense is going to have to shape up and they must balance out their offensive attack so that defenses can’t stack the line on Peterson. With the Bears, Lions, and Packers all being pretty decent I don’t know if they can get out the NFC basement.

panthersweb10s-1-web
27. Carolina Panthers – To be honest I don’t think its Cam’s fault. Since Cam’s been in Carolina what kind of players have they put around him? You have two severely overpaid RBs, an older Steve Smith, and a lot of 3rd, 4th, and 5th type receivers. Unless Cam goes back to having games like his first two games in the NFL this season is going to be rough. If they don’t make a change soon Cam might be out of Carolina sooner than later.
26. Washington Redskins – Well, coming off a bye week I think the Redskins have time to re-group and revise their offense.  Personally, I believe RGIII should have never come back so soon from his injury. With the Redskins being such an overall mediocre team in regards to talent I think he should of held out a little bit longer.  The extra time taken off looks like it helped D. Rose a lot.
big_ben
25.  Pittsburgh Steelers – While their record isn’t that great I think the Steelers have the winning pedigree to where they could make some improvements.  If the Steelers can make some adjustments to their line and give Big Ben more time it’s possible that the Steelers can turn it around…at least on offense.
24. Philadelphia Eagles – The positives for the Eagles is that the running attack is pretty potent.  The bad is that with Vick going down with an injury and a very mediocre defense the Eagles probably will slip down the power rankings.
22. Buffalo Bills – With EJ Manuel being out I could possibly see the Bills falling down even further. While the Bills do have some talent on the roster, QB play is so important in the NFL and depending on an inexperienced QB could be bad.
21. Oakland Raiders – To be honest I didn’t expect the Raiders to be rated so high. They have been so bad for so long that it seems weird to have them rated even this high. To be honest I just think the Raiders have a lack of talent which causes them to have to fight so hard and in the end makes it hard to push out the victory.

tyrann-mathieu-arizona-cardinals-starting
20. Arizona Cardinals – The Cardinals are in the same position as the Raiders. When you are working Peterson to the point of him throwing the ball, running the ball, receiving the ball, defending the ball, and doing the punt returns you are going to run your best player into the ground. With the Cardinals having the Honey Badger on their roster maybe they should allow him to return a few punts just so Peterson could get a breather.
19. San Diego Chargers – Rivers is having a great season but the rest of the team has been pretty average. Depending on how the Chargers would have closed out games they would of easily had a better record and possibly be moved up the power rankings.

Geno+Smith+Tampa+Bay+Buccaneers+v+New+York+ht4JpO-ZXz7l
18.  New York Jets – The defense is good. Geno has been decent. If the Jets can improve their offense they have the potential to make the playoffs and even make a run. If they could find a breakout receiver I think it will make that transition a lot easier for Geno.
17. Atlanta Falcons – Man with the way the Falcons have been playing this year we might have to put them on “Bad Bag of Dope”.  The Falcons were hyped up as a Super Bowl Contender and right now at best they’ll be fighting for a Wild Card spot. The only thing that benefits the Falcons right now is that other than the Saints the NFC South is down.
16.  Cleveland Browns – While the Falcons are underachieving the Browns are overachieving. The Browns got rid of Trent Richardson and since then the Browns have been playing pretty solid. While everyone thought the Browns were mailing it in they decided to fight and could possibly make a push for the playoffs.
arian-foster-texans
15. Houston Texans – Houston still has potential to be good but honestly if Schaub is going to be throwing TDs for the other team they’ll easily fall out the top 15.
14. Tennessee Titans – With Jake Locker going down and the Seahawks up next I don’t know if the Titans have what it takes to maintain this ranking. With the Texans right behind them and the Colts in front of them they will have to stay consistent in order to maintain or move up the power ranking.
13. Baltimore Ravens – Ravens are going to be an up and down team this year. The defense is still solid, but the offense might not be able to hold their end of the bargain.  Ravens might have peaked already at this spot.
12. Chicago Bears – When you make the Saints defense look that good that isn’t a good sign. While the Bears are a pretty solid team overall playing in one of the toughest divisions will make it hard for them to hold on. If they can protect Cutler better and get the ball to their playmakers (Marshall and Forte) they have a chance to sneak into the playoffs.

miami+dolphins+sunday+oct6
12. Miami Dolphins – Well, the Dolphins have shown great qualities this year and some much improvement. The only thing holding the Dolphins back is that they can’t protect the QB.
11. Detroit Lions – Losing key offensive players is not going to help the Lions. While I do think when their healthy they play great overall as a team and are exciting to watch I do think they lack depth at certain positions that they must have if they want to continue to make push to the playoffs.
10. Dallas Cowboys – Overall the Cowboys are just a real solid team. While I think Romo has the ability to choke at any second I do think that the Cowboys can actually do something this year. With the 49ers & Packers starting off slower than expected the Cowboys have the ability to move up the rankings. They have good playmakers on both sides of the ball, having decent coaching, and a GM who will spend in order to win. All they have to do is not choke the game away in the 4th.
9. Green Bay Packers – The Packers are somewhat of an enigma. If the Packers can stay afloat, win out, and get to the playoffs the Packers can easily make another run for the Lombardi Trophy. As long as they have Rodgers as their QB they have a chance to win. Dynamic Quarterbacks often time cover up some of the holes in a team. If you can put up points and have a defense that won’t give the game away you always have a chance to win.

nfl_u_greenaj_576
8. Cincinnati Bengals – Marvin Lewis has been doing this for a while now with the Bengals. They’ve pretty much rebuilt this team from to the Carson Palmer/Chad Johnson days. He has a young team and they’ve shown that they have some talent. If the Bengals can continue to play strong they have a chance of making it to the AFC Championship game.
7. San Francisco 49ers – Somebody other than Boldin is going to have to step up big time in that WR core. Last year there were a lot more options on who to throw the ball to, Gore had a lot more holes to run though, and the defense’s intensity was turned up a notch higher. I do think the 49ers can recapture this throughout the season but can they sustain that with injuries.
6. New England Patriots – As long as Belichick is their head coach and Brady is their QB they have a chance. While the Pats losing Vince Wilfork this will not help the Pats. History has shown when Wilfork is not playing the Pats run D suffers tremendously.
081613-NFL-Kansas-City-Chiefs-Alex-Smith-TV-lacesout_20130816235848973_600_400

5. Kansas City Chiefs – Man what Andy Reid has done with this team is amazing. The Chiefs bringing in Alex Smith at the QB position looks like it has worked out pretty well. There isn’t anything extremely impressive about how they have been winning their games, but if they continue to play “Grind It Out” football they could make a run this season and have one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history.
4. Seattle Seahawks – When the Seahawks beat up on the 49ers it appeared the Seahawks was the team to beat in the NFC. In the last two weeks it appears that while they have much heart the Hawks do appear to be vulnerable at times to where I don’t think they come off looking as impressive as they did at the beginning of the season.
3. Indianapolis Colts – Losing Manning doesn’t seem like it hurt the Colts too much. With Luck at QB he’s shown he has what it takes to be an elite QB in the league. Now, with Richardson running the rock this will open up even more for Luck. The Colts have been playing great ball on both sides and with a more balanced attack the Colts might match up pretty well with Peyton’s new team.
2. New Orleans Saints – To be honest, I’m shocked the Saints defense is playing so well. In the last two weeks the Saints have shown that they don’t have to score 40-50 points a game just to have a chance of winning.  If the Saints defense continues to play this well we might see another Brees-Manning Super Bowl.
manning
1. Denver Broncos – Manning is playing better than anyone. He’s got exactly what he needs on offense and has a good defense which is something that would vary when he was in Indy. Broncos are easily putting up points and they still have key defense players who have yet to return so it is possible that the Broncos might be even better than they are now.

Mayweather vs Canelo Predictions (Sports)

With one of the biggest fights this century coming up, we here at Tha Antidote would like to give our predictions on  this weekend Mayweather/Alvarez mega fight.
You got two guys coming into this fight undefeated.  Mayweather is coming in with a record of 44-0 and Canelo is coming into the fight with a record of 42-0.  Canelo is only 23 with this many fights under his belt. You could argue that Mayweather’s competition has been a lot more stiff. If you go down the line he has victories over Marquez, Cotto, Hatton, De La Hoya, Judah, Corrales, and many more. Especially in comparison to Canelo who’s biggest victory was probably his last one when he defeated Austin Trout.
One of the main reasons why Mayweather continues to be undefeated is that he’s a mastermind in the ring. Floyd posses extremely surprising punching power and is incredibly quick, Even with him possessing those attributes,it’s his defense and him being a ring tactician which has allowed him to be a force even in the later stages of his career. Floyd is extremely patient, makes adjustments on the fly, and knows exactly when to counter and when to let his hands go. Overall, he’s probably the smartest boxer of this generation.
Canelo on the other hand shows that having youth on your side matters. Canelo is very powerful, deceivingly quick, and is a lot bigger than your average welterweight. Canelo’s main advantage in this fight is youth, power, and strength.  Canelo has shown that he can knock guys out. While some believe that he doesn’t posses elite punching power, you have to believe if he catches Floyd solid he could put him down. The question is, will that be enough for Floyd?
Overall, I think the fight has the potential to being a great one with many different scenarios going down. If it’s fair to have two predictions I do believe that Floyd will dominate this fight regardless. The question is can he prevent from being caught with the big blow for a whole 12 rounds. There is no doubt I think Floyd will outbox Canelo throughout the rounds, but I do see it very possible for Canelo to knock Floyd out. We have seen  in the past Mosley wobble Floyd temporarily. I think if Canelo gets Floyd in the same position he could possibly finish him. The only thing is that I wasn’t totally impressed by Canelo in the Trout fight and with Floyd being a much better boxer than Trout I don’t see Mayweather allowing Canelo to get away with some of the things that he got away with in the Trout fight. My prediction for the fight…
Mayweather by split decision.

The only reason why I say split decision is because quite simply I don’t trust the judges. Boxing needs another star and I could easily see them trying to make one in Canelo.

Top 20 Boxers From The Mid 90s To Now (Sports)

Top 20 Boxers of the Mid 90s to Now

With the biggest mega fight of the century right around the corner we decided to take a look at what could be considered the end of an era. Most of the superstars from the 90s and early 2000s are either gone or on their last run. With that being we decided to take a look at the top 20 boxers from  the mid 90s up until now.

Joe-Calzaghe--001

20. Joe Calzaghe – Not really a fan of his slap boxing style. I think he is vastly overrated but he does have victories over Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr, & Jeff Lacy. On top of that he finished his career undefeated. Based off of that I have to put him at the 20 spot.
19. Erik Morales – Erik Morrales kind of falls into that same category as Barrera.  Honestly, if Morales had retired after the first Pac-Man fight he would of been rated a lot higher, but after that bout he lost to Manny twice, as well as a few miscellaneous losses on his record. While he was a fiery competitor he barely makes the list at number 19.
18Marco Antonio Barrera – If you look at Barrera’s career I’d have to say he’s had a pretty good run.  He’s been in some battles with Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Paciaquo, and he’s picked up a few belts on the way. Barrera might of not been the best, but he surely got in the ring with the best and always put on a great fight.  Like Morrales he has a pretty good resume, but he’s going to have to be on the bottom end of this top 20 list.
vitali_klitschko2_1370505c
17. Vitali Klitschko – without any other dominant heavyweight other than his brother you can’t really say he fought a whole lot of great fighters. The one guy who does have a lot of credibility that Vitali has faced was Lennox Lewis who he lost to in Lennox’s last fight. Vitali also was taken down by Chris Byrd  sometime in his career.  Even with that both he and his brother have dominated the heavyweight division ever since Lewis stepped down as champion.  With that being said you still have to give credit for the fact that he has have been dominating for over a decade now.
16. Wladimir Klitschko – In reality I could just put “See Vitali”, but I’d like to go into detail a little bit more. Both Wladimir and his brother Vitali really didn’t have any stiff competition for a long time. Even with that Wladimir stayed consisted and actually improved over time. With losses to guys like Lamon Brewster and Corrie Sanders that did hurt Wladimir’s ranking, but he did go back and avenge his loss against Brewster in convincing fashion.  People tend to forget that he’s been champion for a long long time now.
15. Oscar De La Hoya – Unlike a lot of people I think Oscar is vastly overrated. Don’t get me wrong he was a great fighter, but I couldn’t put him in the top 10. He beat Julio Cesar Chavez when he was past his prime. He beat Pernell Whitaker when he was up in age. Same goes for Hector Camacho.   He lost to Mosley, Trinidad, Hopkins, Mayweather, and Pacquiao. While I do give him credit for beating Quartey, Gatti, and Vargas, I don’t believe those guys were truly the elite boxers of their era. This is the reason why Oscar’s rated so low.
Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright
14. “Winky” Wright – Early in his career Winky Wright got some real bad breaks. He went all across the globe to get a fight and because of that he had to fight on guys home turf where often times they would get the decision. Winky has fought some odd guys including a guy name “Young Dick Wolf”.  Once Winky took down Mosley it seems like he started to get the breaks he was due for.  He’s defeated Mosley twice, Ike Quartey, and Felix Trinidad. If it wasn’t for Winky having long lay-offs between fights his resume would be a lot more attractive.

13. James Toney – Lights Out! While a lot of people know James Toney as that dude who’s always rambling and talked himself into a UFC fight he shouldn’t of taken James was once a dominant boxer.  He’s went from Middleweight to Heavyweight and was able to adapt to the size differences.  One of the best counter punches this era. HE’s won on every level he’s fought at that alone gets him the number 13 ranking.
box_chavez_lopez_01
12. Sergio Martinez – He damn near has a perfect record avenging one of his losses against Paul Williams while his other loss  was to Antonio Margarito who has the reputation of being a cheater. He’s a true fighting champion. He’s fought guys all across the globe and for the most part showed out.  The fact that he wants to be a showman and still be able to come out with the victory says a lot. He’s a crowd-pleaser. If guys didn’t duck him so much in his prime he probably would of had a bigger resume.
11. Andre Ward – I don’t know if it’s premature to put Andre Ward on this list  this high or not, but he’s dominated the competition since he’s been in the game. He ran through the Super Six tournament without a loss. He’s taken on Chad Dawson and dominated him in convincing fashion.  Ward is a pretty sound fighter who I don’t believe will be taking any Ls anytime soon.
box_g_jones_trinidad4_580
10.  Felix Trinidad – Tito has beaten some of the greats including Pernell Whitaker, Hector Camacho, & Oscar De La Hoya (even though I hold that Whitaker victory the same as Oscar’s victory over Whitaker). Throughout his career he proved that not only can he win, but he can also get the KO. When it comes to boxing and drawing you either have to have a great personality, the support of a country, or simply knocking guys out on the regular. Tito carried all these characteristics throughout his career.
9. Shane Mosley –  With a record of 47-8 Shane’s gotta be on our top 20 list.  Shane’s fought some of the best fighters in this generation. He exposed and dominated Antonio Margarito. He beat Oscar De La Hoya in his prime. He took down Vargas twice. He’s fought some of the best including Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Winky Wright, & Canelo.
8. Miguel Cotto – He’s been in the ring with damn near every relevant weatherweight in the last 10 years. He’s fought everyone from Mayweather to Pacquiao. While he has a few losses on his record he’s proven to be competitive in almost all his fights, shown a great heart, and has plenty of victories over many reputable opponents.
Evander-Holyfield-001
7. Evander Holyfield – Evander’s simply a warrior. He’s fought some of the best. He came up as a crusierweight to later become the world heavyweight champion. He’s taken on Tyson, fought Lewis twice where the first bout was a draw, he’s beaten Michael Moorer, and he’s beaten Riddick Bowe. Holyfield has always shown great heart in the ring. While his run in the 2000s wasn’t that great he’s still good enough to make the top 10.
6. Juan Manuel Marquez – A true Mexican Legend. Marquez has taken on some of the best talent in boxing.  Depending on who you ask he’s got 3 victories over Pacquiao, he’s taken on a lot of opponents over the year and for the most part he’s come out victorious. He’s taken on  Tim Bradley next month, if he can beat Bradley that’ll possibly push Marquez the rankings, but if he loses that would probably put Bradley on the top 20 list.
Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao
5. Manny Pacquiao – A lot of people probably won’t agree with this, but Manny’s gotta be somewhere near the top 5.  He’s taken on legends. He’s beaten Marquez multiple times, Morales, Barrera, Cotto, De La Hoya, Mosley, Margarito, Ricky Hatton, etc. and he’s beaten a lot of them into a pulp. Now I don’t necessarily agree with the terms in which he’s beaten some guys at catchweights, but if you agree to the terms you better be ready to fight.
4. Roy Jones Jr – A lot of people forget that Roy was a dominant force in boxing for a long time. With victories over James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, and Antonio Tarver he’s taken on and beaten some of the bigger names in boxing. His dominance, style, speed, and flash can’t be duplicated. Roy probably could of easily been top 3 if he would of retired after the first Tarver fight. Oh, and did we mention that he also has a world HEAVYWEIGHT title victory as well?
84640-004-83FB46BA
3. Lennox Lewis – You could easily say that Lennox is one of the most underrated boxers of all time. If you look at his record he only has 2 losses and he came back and avenged those losses in convincing manner. He’s pretty much beaten every relevant heavyweight boxer when he was fighting. Holyfield, Tyson, Klitschko,  etc.
2. Bernard Hopkins – The ageless wonder. Benard’s resume is astonishing. He’s beaten De La Hoya, Winky Wright, Kelly Pavlik, Jean Pascal, Tavoris Cloud, Antonio Tarver,  and Felix Trinidad. Pretty big names, especially seeing how he fought all those guys after 2000 when many thought he would be past his prime.  Over the last few years he’s shown that age is just a number (at least for him).  A lot of people probably won’t agree with Hopkins being over Jones, but Hopkins overall resume is a lot more impressive in my opinion.
6a00d8341c630a53ef01543585eb81970c-600wi
1. Floyd Mayweather – In my opinion he’s the greatest boxer in the last 15 years. He’s taken on a variety of competitors and has come out victorious in all of his bouts. Before he fought De La Hoya he had victories over very solid competition in Castillo, Gatti, Judah, and Corrales. After that he’s beaten some of the biggest names in boxing including De La Hoya, Hatton, Mosley,  Cotto, Marquez, as well as upcoming fighters who were deemed to be the next big thing in Ortiz & Guerrero. His next fight vs Alvarez will truly determine if he’s the greatest in the last 15-20 years.
